Datron is the legacy British precision-instrument brand represented by manuals for laboratory digital multimeters, multifunction calibrators, voltage and resistance standards, and automated electrical-calibration systems. It is unrelated to the modern CNC-machinery and radio-communications companies that also use the Datron name.
History
Datron Electronics was founded in 1971 by instrumentation engineers in England and moved from Luton to Norwich in 1973. The company built its reputation in precision digital measurement and electrical calibration, developing long-scale digital multimeters, multifunction calibrators, standards, and systems intended for standards laboratories and automated calibration work.
Datron became part of Wavetek in the late 1980s, after which manuals and instruments appeared under Datron Instruments, Wavetek Datron, and related combined branding. The product lineage included instruments such as the 1271 and 1281 precision multimeters and the 4900 calibration system, which remained reference points for high-accuracy DC, AC, resistance, and ratio measurements.
Fluke acquired Wavetek-Datron's precision-instrument business in January 2000. Fluke states that its later 8508A reference multimeter combined Fluke and Wavetek-Datron design experience and replaced the Wavetek 1281. Datron no longer operates as a separate current manufacturer, but its electrical-calibration technology and installed instruments remain part of the history behind Fluke Calibration.
