Flir is Teledyne's thermal-imaging and sensing brand. In the measurement-instrument context, its manuals cover infrared cameras and thermography systems used to find temperature differences, document thermal conditions, and support electrical, mechanical, building, research, and predictive-maintenance inspections. The profile is intentionally limited to those measurement products rather than Teledyne FLIR's broader defense and surveillance portfolio.

History

FLIR Systems was established in 1978 to develop infrared imaging systems, initially for airborne applications. Its official history says the company moved into handheld and laboratory systems in the late 1980s, adding the ability to detect and measure temperature differences. Acquisitions of Hughes Aircraft's industrial infrared-imaging group in 1990, Agema in 1998, Inframetrics in 1999, and Indigo Systems in 2003 expanded the product and technical lineage represented by later FLIR thermography manuals.

Teledyne completed its acquisition of FLIR Systems in May 2021 and now presents Flir as a Teledyne brand. Current Flir products continue the measurement lineage through handheld and fixed thermal cameras, camera cores, acoustic-imaging instruments, and software for analysis and reporting. The 1978 founding date belongs to FLIR Systems itself; longer thermography histories sometimes presented by the brand incorporate predecessor technology and acquired companies and should not be mistaken for an earlier FLIR corporate founding.
