About Hipotronics

Reviewed 2026-07-26

HIPOTRONICS, Inc. is a Hubbell subsidiary that develops high-voltage test and measurement equipment for electrical insulation, wire and cable, motors, transformers, switchgear, and other power apparatus. The catalog focuses on its 700-series AC dielectric sets, HD and H300 hipot testers, HM megohmmeters, D149 breakdown testers, and related calibration documentation.

History

Stanley Peschel established Hipotronics in 1962 and built its original manufacturing facility in Brewster, New York. The name was formed from “high potential electronics.” Early work centered on high-voltage test equipment for the wire and cable industry, followed by AC resonant systems, motor-test systems, DC high-voltage generators, regulating transformers, dielectric test sets, and portable measurement instruments.

Hubbell acquired Hipotronics in November 1992. The company subsequently added Robinson Instruments for partial-discharge measurement, introduced automated controls for its established 700-series dielectric testers, and continued developing hipot testers, breakdown systems, cable-fault equipment, resistance instruments, and high-voltage meters. Hipotronics began moving manufacturing from Brewster to Hubbell's Reading, Pennsylvania, facility in 2021 and states that the relocation was completed in 2022.

Current Hubbell material continues to identify HIPOTRONICS, Inc. as an active subsidiary and lists its sales, service, and manufacturing operation in Reading. The collection's older Brewster-address manuals therefore remain valid historical Hipotronics documents but should not be used to present Brewster as its current operating location.
