History

OHAUS's official history says Gustav Ohaus and his father Karl, a trained scale mechanic, founded the business in 1907 after working in scale repair in Newark, New Jersey. The Harvard Trip balance followed in 1912, and the operation incorporated as Newark Scale Works in 1914. OHAUS introduced precision electronic balances with digital displays in 1979, a portable laboratory-quality balance in 1982, and an electronic moisture-determination balance in 1984.

The company changed its name to OHAUS Corporation in 1988 as its position expanded beyond traditional balances. Its current portfolio includes analytical, precision, portable, bench, floor, counting, retail, and shipping scales, as well as moisture analyzers, water-analysis instruments, centrifuges, shakers, and calibration weights. The official timeline says the corporate headquarters moved to Parsippany in 2010, and the current U.S. site identifies OHAUS Corporation at a Parsippany address.
