Wandel & Goltermann

History

Wolfram Wandel and Ulrich Goltermann founded the business in 1923 after beginning with radio receivers and a radio workshop. After World War II, the company produced its own radio equipment and moved increasingly into electronic measurement. From 1948 it developed general laboratory instruments, and by the 1950s measurement for cable and microwave-link communications had become its principal business.

Wandel & Goltermann moved into a factory in Eningen unter Achalm in 1954 and later built an international sales and manufacturing network. Its measurement program covered telecommunications transmission, level and frequency measurement, signal generation, cable systems, and service testing. These activities explain the range of W&G-branded laboratory and communications manuals preserved in the catalog.

The company combined with Wavetek in 1999 and adopted the Wavetek Wandel Goltermann name. A subsequent combination with TTC produced Acterna; JDSU acquired Acterna in 2005. When JDSU separated in 2015, the communications test-and-measurement lineage continued in VIAVI Solutions. Wandel & Goltermann is therefore treated as a historical manufacturer and legacy brand, not as a current independent company.
