Wavetek, also known as WWG and Wavetek, Wandel & Goltermann, was a defunct manufacturer specializing in function generators, signal generators, and digital instrumentation. The company produced Ethernet test instruments, LAN test gear, cable networks test gear, and fiber optics test gear before undergoing multiple acquisitions and mergers that dissolved its original corporate structure.
History
Wavetek operated as a manufacturer of specialized electronic test equipment, focusing on function generators, signal generators, and digital instrumentation. The company’s product portfolio extended to network testing solutions, including Ethernet test instruments, LAN test gear, cable networks test gear, and fiber optics test gear. These specialties defined its market presence before a series of corporate transactions altered its ownership and operational scope.
In 1991, Torrey Investments acquired Wavetek, marking the first major change in the company’s ownership structure. Seven years later, in 1998, Wandel & Goltermann acquired Wavetek. Following this acquisition, the entity became known by the combined name Wavetek, Wandel & Goltermann, and was also referred to as WWG. This merger integrated Wavetek’s capabilities with those of its new parent company.
The subsequent years saw the fragmentation of the combined entity’s divisions. In 2000, Fluke Corporation acquired Wavetek's Precision Management Division, taking only that specific segment. Later that same year, WWG merged with TTC. The following year, in 2001, IDEAL Industries acquired Wavetek's LAN tester division. These sequential sales and mergers effectively dissolved the original Wavetek organization, leaving it in a defunct status.
